 DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTICS

Disadvantages of Plastics

Natural decomposition of plastic can last from 400-1000 years and few types of plastics are non-degradable as well.

Plastic has become an inseparable and integral part of our lives. The amount of plastics consumed annually has been growing steadily. Its low density, strength, user-friendly designs, fabrication capabilities, long life, low weight and low cost are the factors behind such phenomenal growth.

Plastic waste is very visible as it contributes to a large volume of the total solid wastes. Precisely because of their large visibility plastic wastes have been viewed as a serious solid waste problem

What are the negative effects of plastic?

Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are present in virtually everybody’s blood and tissue. Exposure to them is related to tumors, birth defects, compromised immunity, disturbance of the endocrine system and other disorders.

How plastic is harmful to humans?

Human bodies absorb chemicals which are applied to plastics. Any of these substances have been found to modify hormones or other possible effects on human health. Wildlife may be harmed or killed by plastic waste, contaminated with chemicals and sometimes eaten by marine animals.

Harmful aspects of Plastics:

The ever-increasing plastic production since the 1950s managed to mix the world with the waste of plastic materials that can cause big effects on our environment. Decomposing of a plastic product can last from four hundred to one thousand years with the latest “DEGRADABLE” items, but before that degradation can happen waste plastic will continue to stop our oceans, forests, and waterways, and other natural habitats that are filled with animals who mistake dangerous plastics for food. Chemical harms are also very high since both the production and recycling of plastic make toxic materials of many types.

Chemical Risks of Plastics:

The production and recycling of plastic can cause serious risks to the environment. Some of the chemicals that are projected in plastic can cause chronic damage to the metabolic activities of human beings. Additives, for example, BPA and phthalates are widely employed as a chemical that prevents degrading and destruction of the plastic structure. However, they also mix up with the levels of our natural hormones which can cause serious problems to both men and women.

Threat To Animal Life

As per Marrickville Council of Australia, as many as 100,000 whales, turtles and birds die have been reported to die every year, mainly because of plastic in their environment. Plastic bags not only have adverse effects on our natural habitats, but have also been found to be responsible for the death of many animals, mainly on account of the suffocation encountered on eating them.
